Orthondontics For Children

Orthondontics For Children

Regular orthodontic check ups are very essential for a child, this helps in early diagnosis & thus effective treatment of developing dental problems.

Masochistive habits viz nail biting, thumb sucking, lip biting, mouth breathing- are often taken lightly by parents but such habits severely alter the normal growth & development leading to  changes in facial profile & dental malocclusion.

Habit Breaking Appliances

What are the different habits that can be encountered in children?

This can be thumb sucking, finger biting, nail biting, lip biting, mouth breathing, tongue thrusting etc.,

What are habit breaking appliances?

These are appliances that is made by a dentist to combat the above mentioned habits in children. They can be either a fixed or removable type.

What are the deleterious effects of these habits?

If these habits are continued for a prolonged period of time that can result in gum disease, change in position of teeth and change in shape of the jaws.

Is there any ideal age when these habits can be corrected?

No. whenever the habit is first noticed it is better to consult a pediatric dentist. He may give suggestions depending upon the habits.

Is there any common cause for these habits?

One can probably assume that there may be some kind of psychological disturbance in the child's mind. this must be identified and rectified at an earlier stage whenever possible because these kind of things can affect the child's overall development. Sometimes the first child starts thumb sucking once the second child is born because of lack of attention.

Functional appliances

Most children with crowded teeth and bad bites have narrow jaws and underdeveloped lower jaws, which could be corrected with functional appliances. Functional appliances help correct the bone problems, while the tooth problems are corrected with the orthodontic braces.

The ideal age for the use of functional appliances is between ages seven and eleven, when the cooperation level is the highest. However, functional appliances can be utilized at early age, if the upper jaw is too narrow and is having a negative effect on the child's breathing and speech. Arch Development (functional appliances) can also be used in adults to develop the arch to a more normal shape and size before applying the braces.

The use of functional appliances can reduce the time the child must wear fixed braces and also can reduce the need for the extraction of permanent teeth. Functional appliances develop the dental arches so that all the permanent teeth can erupt, which ensures an outstanding profile, broad smile and healthy jaw joints.

functional jaw orthpaedics is treatment with functional appliances making use of forces created by the head and neck musculature to bring about the desired dental, facial, and functional changes

functional appliances are removable or fixed [cemented] appliances that alter the posture of the mandible [lower jaw] and transmit the forces created by the resulting stretch of the muscles and soft tissues and by the change in the neuromuscular environment to the dental and skeletal tissues to produce movement of the teeth and modification to the growth of the jaws and lower face

we certainly don't use functional appliances for evey patients. Perhaps we would use them in 40% of our cases - and that's only in those patients with an 'overshot' or 'undershot' jaw. Where teeth are crowded, but the jaw size and relationship is o.k., then functional appliances are neither recommended nor used.

The Twin Block appliance, corrects the irregular jaw relationship into a correct [class 1] relationship. The Twin Block appliance was developed by Dr William Clark, a Scottish Orthodontist, over the 1970s and 80s. It consists of upper and lower jaw removable appliances that have plastic blocks covering the back teeth. These blocks force the lower jaw to bite into the ideal relationship with the upper jaw. It is usually worn for twelve months and, because it is in two parts and is clasped to the teeth, it should be worn during eating. We also use the Twin Block frequently for adult patients who have jaw joint disorders

Herbst and Forsus Appliances

Herbst and Forsus appliances are used in conjunction with braces to normalize any discrepancies between the upper and lower jaws

These appliances, by posturing the patient's lower jaw in a forward position, over time promotes growth in pubertal adolescents, helping to eliminate excessive overbites, improve the fit of teeth and possibly prevent the need for jaw surgery. The major advantage of this system over headgear or elastics is that its effectiveness does not rely on patient cooperation.
