What is Pulpectomy?
Restore Your Smile. Reclaim Your Confidence.
At Dr. Futela’s Dental Center, pulpectomy is a commonly performed pediatric dental procedure designed to treat infected or severely decayed primary (milk) teeth. This treatment is essential to preserve a child’s natural tooth structure and support proper oral development.
Pulpectomy involves the removal of the infected or inflamed pulp tissue from the inside of the affected tooth. The pulp—located at the center of the tooth—contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When this tissue is damaged due to deep decay or trauma, it can lead to intense pain and potential spread of infection.
Our goal at Dr. Futela’s Dental Center is to relieve discomfort, eliminate infection, and maintain the tooth until it naturally falls out, supporting proper alignment of the permanent teeth later in life.
🦷 When Should You Consider Pulpectomy for Your Child?
At Dr. Futela’s Dental Center, we recommend pulpectomy for children when a milk tooth is severely decayed or damaged, and the infection has reached the pulp—the innermost soft tissue of the tooth.
If your child is experiencing persistent pain, swelling, or has had repeated infections in the same tooth, a pulpectomy may be necessary to preserve the tooth until it naturally exfoliates. This treatment not only relieves discomfort but also helps maintain space for the proper eruption of permanent teeth, ensuring your child’s healthy oral development.
Classic Signs Your Child May Need a Pulpectomy
At Dr. Futela’s Dental Center, we closely monitor signs that may indicate pulp damage in children’s primary (milk) teeth. If you notice any of the following symptoms, your child may require a pulpectomy:
Persistent Tooth Pain
If your child complains of severe, lingering tooth pain that doesn’t improve with basic pain relief, it could indicate pulp inflammation or infection.
Swelling or Redness in the Gums
Swollen, tender, or reddened gums around a specific tooth may point to an underlying infection needing prompt intervention.
Sensitivity to Hot or Cold
Increased sensitivity to hot or cold food and beverages may be a sign of pulp irritation inside the tooth.
Tooth Discoloration
A tooth that has turned grey or dark may suggest the pulp is infected or has died, requiring removal to prevent further issues.
